Vintage clothing to the fore in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool

Among the many fine things about vintage clothing, one of our favourites here at RETRuly is that it can be purchased truly everywhere – including in parts of the country that are not ordinarily associated with high fashion.

This certainly came to our mind when reading several recent articles in relation to vintage clothing outlets and sales in the North East of England, including – over the course of the last month – in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough.

Hartlepool vintage shop attracts the attention of the stars

As recently reported in the Hartlepool Mail, one firm based in the County Durham town’s Business Centre – Atik Heritage – has drawn admiration from far and wide, including celebrities such as Stereo Kicks’ Jake Sims and I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! winner Georgia Toffolo.

The shop is the brainchild of two former students of the nearby Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD), Robin Page and Tom Townsend, who sold clothes on eBay while studying and decided to turn their passion into a business.

Robin and Tom have been quoted as saying that they aspire to open pop-up shops in major global cities, and here at RETRuly, we wish them the greatest success in the years to come.

Middlesbrough also getting in on the vintage action

A little further south in the Teesside town of Middlesbrough, meanwhile, the vintage spirit was in evidence at the Middlesbrough Pre-Loved Vintage event.

The one-day-only mobile event took place at the historic Empire Theatre, presenting vintage lovers with thousands of items to sift through.

Shoppers were charged a £1.50 entry fee and invited to browse the stalls and fill a clear plastic bag with items that were then weighed and priced at a flat £15 rate for every kilo of clothing.

Jessica Gregory, events manager at Pre-Loved Vintage Wholesale, commented: “It’s just fun. People enjoy the actual experience – if you don’t mind the crowds.

“It’s a great bargain too. We always get such a great response from Middlesbrough.”
